With some embarrassing voting behind us and a few others to come soon, it's interesting to watch why the populists (with a small "p") among others in the UK, US, the Netherlands and a few other countries have won or will win and lose their widespread support probably slowly afterwards.

Firstly, they all dismiss and insult the current establishment. However the "establishment" is more than a handfull of politicians. Hundreds of thousands if not millions of hard working people are part of it too and tearing the establishment apart will certainly touch many gov jobs and probably not in a good way. That does not mean the current governments do not need some renewal but simply insulting all those people is not the way forward.

Secondly, they all claim to "bring back jobs which were stolen by the Asians, Eastern Europeans and Mexicans". However, this will prove to be completely impossible because the only way you can do that is changing the country into ... "China". Already a lot of jobs in western countries are taken by foreign workers simply because obviously the own population does not want them. Additionally, the to Asia outsourced jobs are not paid very well compared to own standards so again, either the own people do not want those jobs or they accept to pay more for the more expensive goods they produce themselves.

Thirdly, they all claim also to "create jobs".

I assume they mean they will increase the "Labor Force Participation" or at least the total amount of jobs. Otherwise it's probably just a hollow phrase and I am afraid it almost certainly is. That is because the Labor Force Participation will definitely decline in the next 10 years or so and with big steps. Robots, Artificial Intelligence and web-shops will take a lot of the current jobs in the factories, the offices and the streets. Self driving taxis and trucks, automated administration, agriculture and manufactoring, Artificial Intelligence driven knowledge based support desks, will all vaporize current jobs. Of course others will return in their place but probably not that many and it's not really "creating jobs" but a natural evolution which already has taken place for centuries.

Fourthly, they all "build walls" for foreigners, at least for the less educated ones. They forget however, that autonomous growth in western countries is not possible anymore. The people are not getting any more productive for many reasons and families are getting smaller and smaller and it's already on a level that it is reducing the total population. By itself that might be not that bad because of the above mentioned decrease of the total amount of available jobs in a country but that's only for the very short term. Building houses and offices, selling goods in the remaining "live" shops, services in entertainment, bars and restaurants will all suffer from declining demand rapidly.

I could go on almost forever with mentioning and dismantling all these prejudices and false promises but the reality is that current voters obviously do not listen to that. We have to learn that the world is really unstoppable changing towards a society with other values. Maybe "having a job" has become not as important as "having a meaningful life".

We need a new type of Leaders (with a big "L"):

  • Leaders who embrace the technology breakthroughs which are currently happening and know how to leverage them towards the people.
  • Leaders who really change the (educational) systems quickly enough to have their people pick up the necessary skills in time. Think about drone-pilots, robot engineers, artificial intelligence psychologists, DNA designers, entertainers, care providers and much more.
  • Leaders who understand the emotions of their people and can show them that the underlying uncertainties about safety, health, water, food and a certain amount of wellfare is not behind a wall of "job-protection" anymore.
  • Leaders who know that poking up people about "us and them" only lead to discrimination, violence and eventually war.

The truth is that the political "establishment" was not able to change quickly enough and left an open door for people who just like to wave flags on the barricades but who will not be able to reverse or slow down human evolution either. Both will have to face "pitchforks and torches" sooner or later until this new type of leaders with a real and valid vision have emerged and are embraced.

Meanwhile, have fun living a life :D.
